"This is an affecting work, which uses clip-art, cultural iconography and some deeply personal and thoughtful interludes to cut straight through the walls that people erect to protect themselves... acheives a paradoxical elegance through it's theme and execution." --COMIC BOOK GALAXY REVIEWS

"...Gardenhead, which is so good I don't even want to talk about it. Seriously... So, let's suppose there's a catagory of comics that is occupied by people like Alan Moore, Dave McKean, Eddie Campbell, Dylan Horrocks, and a handful of others. Yes? Well what I'm saying is this: Dash Shaw. at age 19 or 20, is not only working within that catagory, he's kicking some serious butt within that catagory." --Weissburg's HOOPLAH!

"It's really quite beautiful and sad and expertly done. This is the first work by Shaw that I've read (although I'd heard good things about his Love Eats Brains! series) and I'm now a fan...In other words, get this; I think you'll be glad you did." --Xerography Debt.

"Dash Shaw's Gardenhead is a beautiful examination/rumination of gender roles and identity in comics form. Shaw will make you think." --POOPSHEET Jr. September, 2002

"Of all the artists on this (twelve artists to seek out at SPX 2002) list, 20-year old Shaw has the best chance of being a truly innovative comics master. Loosely associated with the neo-formalist group Meat Haus, Shaw's work differs in that his work is strongly rooted in narrative. this doesn't prevent him from going absolutely crazy in the use of formal innovations and unusual techniques in page design."-SAVANT COMICS MAGAZINE

"Altogether a difficult book to talk about, but an immensely rewarding experience." --OPTICAL SLOTH

"Crazy and fascinating" --TOM HART (Hutch Owen, New Hat Stories)

"Gardenhead" is a 48-page graphic novel printed by Meat Haus Press. It's a love story between a bulimic woman and phrenologist librarian. She leaves her id card at the library desk counter. The librarian has a younger brother who sticks his head in the ground, and shows his drawings to his art teacher.
